Information about the kiteboarding lessons at Vietnam Kiteboarding School.

Every student has different way of learning new skills. Some have natural talents, some first need to conquer their fear, some learn better from theory and some learn better from practice. So for everyone the kiteboarding lessons will look different. Our instructors will do their best to have everyone riding on the board (making a water start) within 7 hours. But in the end the safety of our students, instructors and the other kite boarders in the area will be our number one priority. An example of how your kiteboarding lessons could look like:

Theory – Safety & Wind Window

0%
  • Theory about the wind & Wind Window.
Understanding the Wind Window is critical for managing the power of the kite and your direction of travel. With the use of a miniature kite they will show you the theory behind the Wind Window and how you can use this to travel by kite.
  • Lessons on trainer kite.
With a small kite (size of 2m) you will learn to feel the power of the wind through the kite. Experience the force pulling on the bar and the ease of steering the kite from left to right.
  • Safety theory.
Your safety in our number one priority. Our instructors will explain everything about the equipment you will use in the Kiteboarding Beginners Lessons and how their safety systems work.

kiteboard equipment setup
  • Learning kite preparation & Pre-flight Check.
Now you know more about the feeling of using a small kite and the theory behind the Wind Window it is time to learn more about the equipment you will use. It is very important you know exactly what you do when you setup the kite so you and the people around you will be safe when you start to launch the kite. Together with the instructor you will unpack the kite, inflate it, roll out the lines, straighten out the lines and finally connect them to the kite.
  • Self-Rescue & Emergency Pack-down.
Sometimes things can get out of hand; our Self Rescue and Emergency Pack-down lesson will prepare you for these situations. The instructor will explain how to get back to shore when you are in trouble in the water.
  • Launching & Landing the kite.
With all the basic knowledge about setting up the kite and the pre-flight check you are ready to launch the kite together with your instructor. This will be your first experience with flying a full size kite!

Practice – Independent kite preparation, Upwind body drag & Water re-launch

0%
  • Independent kite preparation.
Now we start off where we finished the last lesson. The instructor will let you set up the kite by yourself and check the kite for safety after you are done. Together with the instructor you will launch the kite and practice your kite control on the beach. When the instructor thinks you have enough control over the kite it is time for the next step.
  • Upwind body drag in the water.
Together with the instructor you will enter the water and try to body drag yourself behind the kite with the knowledge you gathered in the previous lessons. This time you truly experience the power on your harness and the bar.
  • Water re-launch.
In most cases the upwind body drag will have students practice the water re-launch automatically. A small mistake with steering will cause the kite to land in the water. This is not a problem since the kite has an inflatable bar that makes sure the kite will float. In some rare cases the student is perfect in controlling the kite during his body drag exercise and the instructor has to force this lesson by steering the kite into the water. Now it is up to the student to bring the kite back in the air. Theory behind this technique will be explained on the beach and then put into practice.

Practice – Body drag & Water start!

  • Body drag with power stroke.
With fully understanding of the control of the kite it is time to try some power strokes. This technique is used to get you out of the water and get on your board. The first few tries will be without the board so you can focus fully on the kite first.
  • Body drag with board.
Before you can start with the final lesson of the course you have to learn how to body drag with the board. This skill is a challenge since you need one hand to hold the board and have just one hand left over to control the kite.
Once you are comfortable with controlling the kite it is time to learn how to retrieve the board when you lose it in the water. With the knowledge about the Wind Window you practice to kite upwind to retrieve the board.
  • Water start.
If you are a fast student and everything goes well your final lesson of the Beginners Course will be an actual water start. This will be your first real taste of kiteboarding! You will use the Power Stroke technique to get on your board and try to make your first meters. Depending on how fast you learn you will have more time to practice the water start and some actual riding skill.
